This makes more sense than you might think.
Let’s start with the obvious reasons. Caleb Williams was born and raised, attended high school, and still has family in Washington DC.
Great, and Peyton Manning bought a house that one time in Miami. How’d that work out?
But this might be different. We know Caleb Williams likes to be comfortable. He followed Lincoln Reilly to USC. He ran to his mom and cried after losing to the University of Washington. He opted for the comfort of a USC Pro Day over the Combine in Indianapolis. And he’s entering the draft without an agent while being advised by his dad.
For the record, none of these things are good or bad. They’re just facts, and those facts suggest that Caleb doesn’t like to be exposed and enjoys his privacy and comfort.
If trade does happen, here’s why it’ll work. Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury is good friends with Lincoln Reilly, it’s how he ended up on the USC staff last year. Kingsbury knows Caleb, and perhaps more importantly, he knows quarterbacks. Caleb is often compared to Patrick Mahomes because of his elusiveness, wild arm talent, and creative playmaking ability. The coach/player match is there.
Who coached Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech? Kliff Kingsbury.
And with new ownership taking over a complete shit show of a franchise, what better way to change the narrative by bringing in the top overall prospect in the draft? New owner Josh Harris is from Chevy Chase, Maryland, 30 minutes away from Commanders Field. You know who else was born 30 minutes from Commanders Field? Caleb Williams.
But who really gives a fuck? Although, it would be a cool narrative, like Jake and Elwood putting the band back together.
Speaking of Chicago… Why the fuck would the Bears entertain trading away the opportunity to draft, according to some, a generational talent like Caleb Williams? Because they’ve done it before, less than a year ago, remember?
Ryan Poles traded out of the number one overall spot last year, that’s why they have the number one pick again this year. And Poles is no stranger to making moves on draft day. In fact, since Poles was hired only 3 teams have made more trades (19) than the Bears.
We know the Bears want to build a foundation for a sustainable future. Poles learned that in Kansas City. Building the team’s core and then finding a QB is the right way to build, rather than the other way around.
Plus, the Bears only have four picks in this years draft, FOUR! The Commanders have nine, and six in the top 100.
To only move down one spot in the draft, still net your franchise quarterback, and pick up at least 3 more picks this year and possibly a first rounder next year? Why the fuck not?
Odds are, the Bears will take Caleb Williams at one and start their rebuild. But Williams has been the number one overall prospect in this years class for over a year. The Bears have had the first pick locked in since December 31st. Yet, they still haven’t said they’re taking Caleb Williams with that pick.
The Chicago Bears are still on the clock, for now…
